Barahona

Introduction

Barahona is the gateway town to the Enriquillo Basin and Pedernales Peninsula, both hot, dry and arid regions with a high concentration of national parks and protected areas.

Barahona itself has an airport, a busy port, and a growing tourist infrastructure. The cheaper hotels tend to be in the downtown area, while the more expensive options are along the coastal road, Avenida Enriquillo. Try places such as the Los Hijos de Dindo Hotel (tel: 524 5510), Hotel Ana Isabel (tel: 524 5422) and Hotel Caribe (tel: 524 4111) to save money; and more expensive establishments such as the Riviera Beach Hotel (tel: 524 5111) and the Guarocuya Beach Resort (tel: 524 4121) to be beside the sea.
