Fact File
Where and when: The beach at Cabarete must have one of the highest concentrations of windsurfers in the world. For those with no previous experience, the best time to learn how to windsurf is from April to December when the winds are lighter. From late spring to the end of summer, the winds are at their strongest and most consistent - June tends to be the windiest month - while during the winter the sea can get a bit choppy and conditions are more suited to the intermediate and advanced surfer. For most of the year, you can expect afternoon wind speeds to range from about 15 to 25 mph. Click here for the latest wind conditions.
Equipment: The windsurfing schools in Cabarete spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year on the latest equipment, including Neil Pryde sails and F2, HiFly and Mistral boards. In the winter months, a 'shorty' wetsuit is recommended.
